We completed a certification course, which taught everything from getting familiar with the ATV to basic maneuvers. Then we hit the trails at the ORV Park. After a trip or two around the park, I shifted out of second gear, which tops out at 21 mph, and gained a little confidence.
I channeled my tough side to make my husband proud. When it was time to park the ATV for the afternoon, I wanted to keep riding. Before you go out to the Off-Road Vehicle Park on the outskirts of Lewis Main, consider taking a safety introduction course. Show up to class prepared: wear long sleeves, long pants, boots must cover and support your ankle and gloves.
If you have your own DOT-certified helmet, feel free to bring it to the course. The course is a mixture of classroom learning a covered area at the practice. For example, there are two buttons for shifting and three brakes. The instructors were experienced, patient and provided great feedback. This was truly an incredible experience!
