To run the country, feds do everything that private sector employees do — and more. So like the private sector, the federal government hires engineers, teachers, IT experts, scientists, business managers, lawyers, PR specialists, policy wonks, medical professionals, accountants, auto mechanics, electricians, property managers — and more.

Feds work as spies, volcano watchers, park rangers, terrorist hunters, disease detectives, curators of precious historical documents and diplomats. The possibilities are endless. Feds work in every imaginable setting, from offices, laboratories, museums, libraries, hospitals, parks, forests and marine sanctuaries located throughout the United States to embassies located in far-flung countries. Another important advantage: the federal government provides one of the precious few workplaces where you can work exciting jobs, earn competitive salaries and still have a life.

Most feds stick to a hour work week. The federal government also offers these first-rate perks:. Also, it is generally much harder to fire federal employees than employees in other sectors.

Plus, federal employees receive regularly scheduled promotions, merit-based promotions, and annual cost-of-living salary increases. For more information about federal salaries, see Chapter They can take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to attend to a birth, adoption or seriously ill family member. This option helps feds save up to 40 percent in out-of-pocket health care and dependent care expenses.

Moreover, unlike most private sector employees, feds get another coveted benefit: lifetime health insurance coverage. Such programs, for example, currently enable about 20 percent of federal workers to work from home or from a nearby telework center at least one day per week —a figure that is increasing as telecommuting programs mature. In addition, many feds can opt to work nine hours per day in exchange for taking off every other Friday. To backfill for the impending retirement tsunami, the federal government is vigorously recruiting all types of professionals at all levels of their careers.

Indeed, large percentages of new federal hires are now mid-career professionals. Moreover, every retirement at top grades is expected to trigger multiple staffing actions as lower level employees ascend to fill the resulting power vacuum. This means that the retirement tsunami will make it easier than ever to move up in the federal government. When you think of government employees, do you visualize dowdy, school-marmish women and frumpy, pocket protector-clad men toiling in musty offices?

If so, your perceptions are due for an update. In other words, the feds are registering lower and lower on the stodgy-meter. Yale graduate Lily Whiteman knows the federal hiring process from the inside out. As a federal career coach and hiring manager, she is an expert in navigating the federal hiring system and crafting successful applications. She has trained hundreds of professionals how to land federal jobs and promotions.

And Whiteman practices what she preaches. Since , she has used the techniques in this book to advance in four agencies, including the Vice President’s National Partnership for Reinventing Government. Lily Whiteman has participated in government job selections from every conceivable angle. She is a:. Currently based at the United States Mint, she leads popular seminars and provides one-on-one coaching on how to write resumes, application essays KSAs and cover letters, and how to ace interviews.

Moreover, Lily has rounded out her own experiences by interviewing dozens and dozens of other federal hiring managers, whose advice is also included in Get Hired! As a Career Coach, hiring manager and federal employee, Lily has reviewed piles and piles of federal job applications.

She knows what works, what doesn’t and why. She is an expert in:. The most important part of any resume is the experience section. Recruiters and hiring managers expect to see your experience listed in reverse chronological order, meaning that you should begin with your most recent experience and then work backwards. Don’t just list your job duties below each job entry.

Instead, make sure most of your bullet points discuss impressive achievements from your past positions. Whenever you can, use numbers to contextualize your accomplishments for the hiring manager reading your resume. It’s okay if you can’t include exact percentages or dollar figures.

There’s a big difference even between saying “Managed a team of engineers” and “Managed a team of 6 engineers over a 9-month project.

Most importantly, make sure that the experience you include is relevant to the job you’re applying for. Use the job description to ensure that each bullet point on your resume is appropriate and helpful. Certifications can be a powerful tool to show employers that you know your stuff. A resume summary statement is a sentence spiel at the top of your resume that quickly summarizes who you are and what you have to offer.

Remember to address skills and experiences that are emphasized in the job description. Don’t Have A Professional Resume?

This same CD has countless more resources, such as templates to improve your KSA’s, preparation for your interviews, resume templates, and useful articles the author has previously written for The Washington Post.

This was the first book I read about procuring federal employment and it left me with a global picture of the practice; however, I did find later on that certain aspects of the federal job search are barely skimmed, i.

Elements like this could mean a “make it or break it” deal for an application, and this book barely mentions them. Also, the process of the actual writing of the resume and KSA’s is covered from a superficial angle when compared to other similar texts, such as Kathryn Troutman’s “Ten steps to a federal job – How to land a job in the Obama Administration”.

Nevertheless, the book provides an excellent starting point in the federal job search, especially in Chapter 2, loaded with resources on where to look for such jobs. Did it help me get the job? I must happily report that it did get me to an internship with the Department of State. We shall see what the future holds thereafter. Ex Social Security Administration employee. I’m a midlife career changer.

As a former legal secretary, I was miserable and desperate to get out of that field and willing to do whatever it took to get out, including depleting my entire life savings and accumulate massive debt.

At an age when I should be saving for retirement, I need all the help I can get with school loans. That review alone was the reason I bought the book, and I have to say it is by far the most useful, valuable, and helpful book I’ve ever purchased. I sent Lily and email with a question about KSA’s and left a voice mail; it took 2 days to get a response, which I felt was very quick considering the economy, with people all over the country job hunting and sending emails with questions.

There’s even a sheet for the “tell me about yourself” opener. For my resume, I’m using a modified version of the “recent grad” template because I do have 20 years of previous work experience. There are “Hot Tips” throughout the book. For example, one provides a link on how to convert a word doc to PDF. I thought you had to pay massive money for software to do that. Another Hot Tip advises you to do Google searches on terms like “example resumes” together with your job title to see the resumes that pop up to help you craft yours.

This is in addition to the advice and templates that come with the book. The federal process is convoluted and intimidating to say the least. This book alleviates the confusion and lack of confidence in being able to appropriately submit your application.

I have been working w Social Security Admin since June, I love my job. I used this book as a guide to get this job. So I have to give credit to Lily Whitman’s book for helping me make my dream come true – career changing out of the god-forsaken legal secretarial field.

I knew I needed to get into the government once I got the necessary experience and certifications, but the whole process of applying and using USAJOBS was seriously intimidating.

I have to say the proof is in the pudding. I followed all of the advice and got four job offers in two months and I currently have a government job. This is a really good book. However, I made the mistake of purchasing the Kindle version. For starters, the description of the book even the physical book does not list that there is a CD.

That’s because the author makes mention of the CD 50 million times in the book. As I read the book, I became more and more frustrated by the fact that many of the examples and templates I need are on the CD It would have been nice if the information that was provided on the CD could have been provided digitally through the Kindle version as well.

Needless to say I am beyond mad. Don’t waste your money buying the Kindle version. See all reviews. Your recently viewed items and featured recommendations. Back to top. Get to Know Us. Make Money with Us. Amazon Payment Products.

Take a long, hard look at all the things you did outside of just going to class. This is the spice you can add to your high school grad resume to give the recruiter the whole enchilada and not just a bland corn tortilla. According to a government study, most youth engage in extracurricular activities even when employed.

That makes for stiff competition. Add things that are relevant. Have you taken part in any advanced classes, academic fairs, bees, or other competitions? Note those down too. Knowledge of any foreign language, especially as a recent high school graduate, really stands out like bling bling. Make sure to use a standardized scale to rate your language knowledge.
