Any of these limitations can have a severe adverse impact on the availability of required medical services and supplies or delay timely medical evacuations.

Some countries have inadequate infrastructure such as a poor or negligible public health care system, poor sanitation, unreliable electricity and a lack of potable water. There may also be infectious and communicable diseases, such as malaria, dengue fever, typhoid, tuberculosis, rabies, encephalitis and gastrointestinal diseases.

There may be no health unit at the post and next to no local medical facilities. The local emergency room, for example, might be completely inadequate, without ventilators, defibrillators, x-ray capabilities, etc.

There are often no blood banks or limited medical supplies and medications available locally. Due to political instability, security could be a concern. Candidates should be aware that these posts are neither few in number nor confined to a specific geographic region. There are numerous posts where conditions appear similar to that of the U.

As a result, stress levels among employees may be very high. Given these concerns, the Department of State only assigns employees with unrestricted medical clearances to such posts and is unable to hire new employees without such clearances. While the candidate must be medically cleared for worldwide service as a condition for being offered employment, the Department of State does not consider the medical condition of eligible family members for pre-employment purposes.

Defined benefit plans such as pensions—in which participants are guaranteed a specific income from retirement onward—have obvious benefits for employees. A pension is a retirement plan that provides monthly income during retirement. Pensions are defined benefit plans, in contrast to k s and IRAs, which are defined contribution plans.

The difference between the two types is that defined benefit plans are typically funded by an employer or labor union, while a k or IRA is funded by employee contributions sometimes with added contributions from the employer. Further, a defined benefit plan promises a specific income, while a defined contribution plan does not. If you have a pension, you will receive a set monthly income in retirement. The amount of this income may be determined at a flat rate or as a formula that takes into account your salary and years of service with an organization.

If your employer goes bankrupt, PBGC steps in and provides partial benefits. Since the creation of the k in the late s, employer participation in pension plans has dropped sharply. Defined contribution plans such as k s offer employers cost savings, lower risk, and less government regulation.

However, unlike pensions, k s make no guarantees about income during retirement. Unsurprisingly, pensions remain a popular benefit among workers. Certain industries and employers are more likely to offer pensions than others. Government workers are much more likely to have access to pension plans than private-sector workers.

Among private-sector workers, those with union jobs are more likely to have pensions than those who are not in unions. In the public sector, these include jobs in education, government, or law enforcement. In the private sector, look for jobs in utilities, motion pictures and sound recording, or transportation and warehousing.

Another approach is to look for private-sector jobs with employers who offer pensions. Note that fewer employers fit this description nowadays.

Many private employers who once offered pensions have frozen these benefits and replaced them with k s for new employees. However, in May , these private employers were still offering pension benefits, often in addition to k s:. The best jobs with pensions meet certain standards: they offer above-average pay, a strong occupational outlook, and high job satisfaction. These are among the best jobs with pensions:. Like teachers, registered nurses in some states belong to unions, which provide pensions as well as b plans—the non-profit equivalent of k s.

Police officers are often members of unions and have pensions. Electricians learn their trade through apprenticeships or trade schools. Like most of the other jobs on this list, electrical work is often a union job.

Federal, state, and local government jobs often come with a pension. There is a wide range of job titles under this umbrella, from administrative staff to engineers to federal law enforcement.
