After just one year of humbly learning from and co-teaching with a delightfully peculiar group of sea creatures in the Seaquarium at her school, Laura cannot imagine teaching and learning any other way!

While new to marine ecology and biology, Laura approaches these subjects with curiosity and joy. Laura is passionate about ocean education because it nurtures a sense of wonder and ecological awareness in learners, while simultaneously creating opportunities for meaningful cross-curricular exploration.

Before joining UBC I was a classroom teacher, marine educator, and park naturalist. My work focuses on elementary science, environmental education as slow ecopedagogy, and teacher education. I am a naturalist, scientist, and educator of, for, and in the environment and an advocate for experiences which nurture our sense of wonder for the human and more than human worlds.

Ziyad is a teacher-to-be, fitness instructor, engineering graduate and a nature lover! This eventually led him to have a soft spot and appreciation for oceans and marine life, which he got to re-experience as part of his Community Field Experience through UBC! I love getting this opportunity to share my knowledge as well as being able to learn new things within Ocean Wise on a regular basis! Before Ocean Wise I was a Youth Outreach worker within my community, providing after school programming with Indigenous youth.

I have a strong passion for teaching, sharing and engaging with the younger generation. I am a Doctoral Candidate in the Faculty of Education at Memorial University of Newfoundland and a Science Teacher in the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District, as well as a beachcombing aficionado and reflective educator dedicated to the memory business that is teaching. Life and learning is sensory first, then cognitive—local investigations make engaging the affective domain more likely—forming meaningful memories that challenge prior conceptions.

How can this happen face to face and remotely? Download the full schedule here. Friday night : FREE! Each day features lectures, workshops. Lunch included. PDUs available or Certificate of Participation for students. Registration is required for the majority of the conference on Saturday and Sunday. Morning and afternoon refreshments will be provided as well as Saturday lunch.

Register Now. Please contact Fawn Custer: or envtgsldrfawn aol. Washington NAME will be heading out to the coast on Friday, April 10, for a weekend of festivities and marine biology.

But the highlight was a GoPro video of an astounding recent display by K-Pod off of Alki Point, complete with breaches, tail lobs and spy hops. It left the whole crowd speechless. The final presentation, by Dr.

Clement Furlong U. Professor of Genome Sciences , looked at how marine mammals are at particular risk to contamination by organophosphate pesticides because they lack the genes necessary for detoxification.

Unfortunately, these pesticides, particularly Chlorpyrifos, are still widely used are certainly making their way into Puget Sound.

I was robbed by a man with a machete and a gun on the way down. I was the last one at the summit, isolated from the other hikers, and he was waiting for me. He had asked the hikers ahead of me how many people were left at the summit one.

It happened near the bear cave cueva de oso at pm. I managed to give him my money and get away unharmed, but it was truly frightening. When I reported it at the base, they asked if it happened near the bear cave, which leads me to believe that this has happened before. Awesome hike. Stopped at the sign that read 30 min de cubre because of thick fog, but really made no difference to me- safety over summit fever : scrambly for sure near the end but if you stick near the plants definitely doable.

So quiet and serene!! Big love. Some tough scrambles. The rest of our party turned around. Super high quality trail, and fun altitude challenge especially if you've only been in the area for a day or two. The cable car didn't open until almost 10am for us, and the hike takes at least 4 hours, likely more like hours to summit and get back for most folks. We enjoyed the hike even with poor visibility, but I'm sure it's stunning on a nice day.

Very challenging! Steep and a lot of scrambling. Some areas are also quite exposed. Get there early as the afternoon may bring in clouds. Bring in layers as it gets cold midway to summit. Ok this is truly a magnificent hike, especially considering the fact you can grab a cab straight to the TeleferiQo in like 10 minutes from Quito center. Like others have said, get there early to avoid being socked in by clouds.

The elevation stated on the AllTrails map is obviously wrong, no way anyone would be doing this if it was a 30k ft climbing day hike. Other than that, the hike is very straightforward until you reach the scrambly bit.

On our way up, we took the climber's right of summit route, which is probably Class 4 scrambling but has lots of good holds. I preferred this because its very solid and there's less of a chance of a rock getting launched into your face someone launched a rock at my leg a little lower so do be careful. On the way down, we took the less steep, more switchbacky and gradual route climber's right of the summit facing downhill.

Just go slow and be careful and it will be fine - there are lots of good solid rocks for footing. Once you reach the screen field, go straight downhill through the scree keeping an eye on the trail and on folks ascending to your left. You can probably see tracks through the scree where others have done the same.

A savior on your joints and good for traffic flow too! Also FYI the signs along the trail state min from TeleferiQo to summit which we found to be a very conservative estimate, it took us about 4 hours round trip. But you know your body so plan accordingly! My first time in the Andes was incredible!

Great acclimatization hike. Recommend being in Quito for a day or two before trying. Great Christmas Eve training hike with fun scramble to summit with many variations through the rocks. Some are more challenging but you can always choose an easier route. Favorite was seeing Cotopaxi, Cayambe and all other peaks rise above the clouds. Leave at first tram up,, so you can take your time and be down before last tram at Great trail, first time on my own. Short walk from the Teleferico station to the swing.

Great views of Quito but make sure you go in the morning for less cloudy views unlike us. If you've only been in Quito for a couple of days, you will begin to feel the altitude as you ascend the mountain.

Once at the top, stop into the cafe located to the right of the station to enjoy some coffee and cake while soaking up the amazing views of Quito below. There is a picture opportunity located on the north side of the building, where you pay an extra dollar to stand on a fake rope bridge that provides a neat optical illusion. Continue up the trail to the swing for another photo opportunity.

Once you arrive at a saddle, you will come across a small restaurant and horseback riding guide. Afterward, you can continue up the trail towards the Antena Ruta a Rucu, which is the third-way point along the journey towards Cumbre Rucu.

If you're properly acclimated, continue onward to reach the summit of Cumbre Rucu. There are frequent rain and electrical storms that occur at this location. Spent one day in Quito prior to hiking, definitely felt the altitude especially on the scramble up.

Scramble is tricky but fun, very sopped in with clouds but weather at top was good! Very worth it! Rucu Pichincha hard Length Description Waypoints 2.
