It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Sylvia Marie Dixon.
She passed away peacefully on Friday, July 22, at Royal Columbian Hospital with her family by her side. Sylvia nee Lavigne was born on May 31, in Meota, Saskatchewan. She grew up in the Lower Mainland eventually settling in Coquitlam after having married her husband, Ralph Dixon. Together they raised two children – Cathy and Len. Sylvia once again entered the work force working at St.
Thomas More for over 25 years. She so enjoyed handing out late slips and making connections with the staff and students. During this time, Sylvia became a grandmother five times over. She adored her grandchildren and was very proud of them. In her retirement years, Sylvia enjoyed travel, being together with family and friends, and golf. She was very proud of her accomplishments in this sport and looked forward to every Tuesday and Thursday morning as she headed out to Poppy Estates in Langley.
Friends were very important to Sylvia. For many years she met with a group of ladies self entitled, The Stitch and Bitch.
Together, this special group of ladies supported each other throughout most of their lives. After moving from her beautifully decorated condo in New Westminster, Sylvia moved to Thornebridge Gardens. She was so lucky to have her best friend there of 70 years, Anna Smith. Together they participated in the various activities offered by the home. They joked how they would pretend they were on a cruise ship. She is predeceased by her loving mother, Edna Lavigne, her father, Omer Lavigne, her brother, Adrian Lavigne and her husband, gone too soon, Ralph Dixon.
Also thank you to the hardworking and positive nurses on 4 North and then on 6 North. You truly are angels on Earth! Norman Morrison passed away at the age of 87 in the early hours of July 11, , at the side of his beloved wife Maureen at home in North Vancouver. At the age of four, Norm lost his father, John. For 61 years of marriage, Norm was rarely without Maureen at their family home of the past 60 years in Blueridge, North Van where they raised their five children Marianne Dennis , Norm Jr.
From his seat at the Sunday dinner table, Norm would enjoy watching his large brood talk and debate. He read his daily newspapers, stayed on top of everything, and expected opinions to be respectful, smart and well-informed. He was happy tinkering around his house and painting whatever he could find in need of a fresh coat. He had a longtime passion for Hastings Park Horse-racing and eventually co-owned his own racehorse. Norm is best remembered as a selfless man who greatly valued friends and family.
He never hesitated to offer whatever help that was needed to whomever needed it. He and Maureen were very active in their parish, St. Pius X, and supported many charitable causes. Norm never forgot his humble beginnings and always had a strong sense of being blessed in life with cherished family and friends. A funeral mass will be held at St.

Helen continued to work in various offices in H. Dockyard, later called C. Esquimalt, until she retired to White Rock in to care for her sister Qu’Appelle who passed away in Prior to that Helen took care of her mother for 7 years in Victoria.
Although Birdie had her own condominium, they were constant companions and took many trips together worldwide. Always kind and caring, much loved by her family and friends, we will never forget how she touched us all in our shared journey through life. The family would like to thank the personnel of the Peninsula Retirement Living for the many laughs and the loving care shown to Helen through the nine years she enjoyed there.

Wanting adventure and following her heart, Ann joined her future husband, Paul Persoon, after he immigrated to Canada and proposed marriage a year after he arrived. Together they raised a wonderful family while active in parish life at St Francis de Sales Church in Burnaby. Ann lived with the spirit of volunteerism – especially in her role as an active CWL member and serving in the education committee there. While in her 50s, Ann went back to school and became a pre-school teacher at St Francis de Sales, proudly teaching for sixteen years alongside other quality Catholic educators there.
Once retired, she and Paul spent their golden years together enjoying picnics, travelling in their camper, and visiting family wherever they lived. After 63 years of marriage, Paul passed away in , and Ann continued her life with grace and perseverance, no matter the challenge, and without complaint.
Her 9 children, 22 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren survive her and will miss her gentle smile, wit, and maternal love. Elly lived with enthusiasm her entire life and had a strong sense of justice for people and for the natural world.

She became a dedicated teacher having spent the majority of her year career teaching at Ridgeway Elementary in North Vancouver.
As a member of St. Edmunds Catholic Church, her faith was central to who she was and a strong part of her world. She loved to learn, explore, and challenge herself by doing the things she loved most: spending time with family, cooking delicious meals, traveling the world, hiking, biking, golfing, reading, taking long walks, and skiing.
Always with a friend or family in tow, her willingness to try and learn new things was infectious. The most resourceful person we knew, she always had a book or activity to recommend every time you talked to her. Zia Auntie Velia’s life was full of love, laughter and beautiful memories which were also shared with her numerous nephews, nieces and relatives.
Making an impact on everyone she met; she always had time for everyone, and you could always count on her. The beautiful and infinitely gracious Gloria Scavazza slipped away peacefully on May 22nd at the age of Known as Auntie G to all who loved her, including her stepchildren, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and finally great greats.
She grew up on Commercial Drive and worked as an accounts manager for Shores Jewellers. She and Giovanni enjoyed travelling. At home, Gloria and Johnny loved to go out dancing and she was a gifted cook. There was always a pot of delicious pasta on the stove for anyone who turned up at her table. Gloria loved animals, especially cats. Her life was well lived, full of love, kindness, and compassion. She was loved by family and friends, respected in her church and community, and truly admired by all who encountered her.
She had a strong and enduring Catholic faith and turned to St. Anthony in her prayers. Auntie G will reside in our hearts forever. Ernie was born in Fern Ridge BC. At the age of 19 he joined the First Canadian Army Dental Corps traveling through Holland and was among the Canadian soldiers credited with liberating Holland and pushing the Germans out of the Netherlands. He loved the outdoors, but his greatest passion was painting.
At the age of four, he fled with his family to Macau to escape the Japanese invasion. There, he attended the Istitudo Salesiano with his older brother Pedro, where his father worked as a secretary. In the following years, his family faced a punishing twist of fate when his father died.
Coping with distress as a young widow, his mother found work with the Precious Blood Sisters and through the missionary, she found grace in knowing God. As a devout Catholic, she instilled her spirituality in her children. Aloysius was baptized in Macau in After the war ended in , he followed his family and settled in Hong Kong.
In , Fr. Aloysius responded to his calling and joined the Salesian of Don Bosco. In , he went on to study philosophy at the Novitiate Salesian Seminary in Naples, Italy where he stayed for several years. In , he studied theology at Melchet Court, Sherfield, England, where he entered his lifelong journey into priesthood. Aloysius was ordained in Macau on December 18, He started first as a teacher and administrator in Salesian schools and then discerned the call to serve as a diocesan priest.
He came to the Archdiocese of Vancouver in and was incardinated into the Presbyterate of the Archdiocese in He is most remembered for having served for a long time with dedication and zeal at Saint Francis Xavier Parish, in Vancouver.
As a former teacher, Fr. Aloysius was dedicated to nurturing the spiritual maturity of his ministry. Francis Xavier Parish in Like a good shepherd who is constantly on the lookout for green pastures, Fr. Aloysius tirelessly devoted himself to his ministry. With keen observations and confidence, he identified areas in which promotion and upgrade were apparent.
Under his leadership, he led the building of a home for the elderly – Happy Manor was opened in July In the following year, the new parish daycare center was also completed. Father was always committed to help and respond swiftly to requests. Since , he took up additional ministry work in Seattle for the Catholic community there.
He commuted to Seattle once monthly over a period of ten years. The congregation grew quickly, and in the summer of , a Chinese ministry was established at Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish, where he was appointed associate pastor.
Aloysius witnessed the inauguration of the new Saint Francis Xavier church and retired from active ministry in Since his retirement, father devoted his time to work with the Sisters of the Epiphany, a member of the Salesian family in Shaoguan, China, as a volunteer English teacher.
Although technically retired, he continued to contribute much of his time and expertise to serve at St. Theresa Roman Catholic Church.
Invited by the bishop of Macau as a guest pastor, Fr. There, he reconnected with his distant memories of living in Macau during his childhood. In his retirement years, Fr.
Aloysius maintained a part-time presence in Vancouver and led several pilgrimages to Europe, South America, and Asia. Aloysius touched the lives of many. His presence was found in every facet of our lives, through baptisms, sacraments, housewarmings, marriages, celebrations, and beside hospital beds.
We have known him as a pastor, teacher, confessor, counsel, brother, and a friend. Father fell ill in the beginning of and bravely fought his illness. He passed away peacefully on May 20, , in the comfort of his home. At the end of his life, Fr. Aloysius felt that he found contentment and fulfillment in his life as a priest, servant, man of prayer, preacher of the Word, mediator and man of the people. Dennis Wayne, O. Dennis was a quiet, private person. A good listener, he could be relied upon for valuable insight and advice. He was sympathetic and compassionate to those in need, spiritually and emotionally.

Pattie A. Pryma : Everyone has a story to tell and through her many years of experience as a registered nurse Dr. Pryma has learned the importance of people sharing their stories in creative ways. Her PhD dissertation utilized a photo-voice method to enhance the stories of strength from women who have experienced domestic violence. This has led her to expand her research into the benefits of Art journaling and using creative arts as a form of Self-Care with faculty and students at Mt Royal University where she is an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing and Midwifery.

When not working and researching Pattie enjoys focusing on her own self-care through mindfulness activities including her own art practice exploring mixed media. We explore the ways in which communities, schools and families can support growth and development in adolescents who identify as racialized and LGBTQ, as they navigate uncovering aspects of their identity in a variety of environments.
It is evident that building diverse relationships with safety, acceptance, and allyship between peers and trusting adults, creates an infrastructure for racial and sexual minority LGBTQ youth experiences to become visible. Research identifies the areas that are lacking resources and how inadequate responses from family members, peers, leaders, and community members can lead to negative repercussions.
Based on the research provided, we believe that to build a better tomorrow, we must first bridge the gap of knowledge and understanding about the lived experiences of LGBTQ-POC youth which are currently underrepresented.
Aimee Gill is a passionate and creative visionary with lived experiences. Aimee hopes to pursue post-secondary studies at X University and gain further field related experience and broaden her scope of practice. Aimee hopes to one day teach Child and Youth Care and inspire the minds of the next generation of CYCs, to open and shift perspectives in a similar way to the impact her professors had on her.
She aspires to connect with individuals that can walk alongside her in this journey of caring for the leaders of tomorrow, and to build relationships that can allow healing in herself and others.
Aimee is a wife, dog-mom, a gym and yoga enthusiast, a painter, writer, singer, dancer, someone who truly loves to express herself in all mediums. Eight years ago, Filipa was given the opportunity to move to Canada, and she decided to go to college. She wanted to be able to support others in achieving their life goals. The field of CYC has allowed Filipa to share her interest in behaviour and mental health with the young people that she works alongside.
In return, Filipa is honoured to learn with and from young people as she continues her development as a Practitioner. Fotini Kafes is a wife, and mother of two adult children and two fur babies. She has a B. A in Psychology from York University. Fotini grew up in Malawi, Africa and while living in Malawi, she witnessed children, the most vulnerable population, live in poverty and lack basic needs. Additionally, she witnessed the wide range of risks posed to children living in Africa such as child marriage, child labour, sexual exploitation and children living with AIDS HIV.
Fotini felt helpless and sparked a strong desire to support and advocate alongside vulnerable populations. Fotini has always had a passion to work with children and youth and is in her final year as of March of the Advanced Child and Youth Care program at Sheridan College, and works in the Foster Care system.
The Canadian demographics, especially those of higher learning, are drastically shifting. In CYC classrooms, people of color, people with differing abilities, differences in religious beliefs, and the values students bring with them are constantly changing the learning environment. Simultaneously, the opportunities for students to think globally, to immerse themselves in international, cross-cultural, and dynamic contexts are increasing. Shemine Gulamhusein , is an emerging scholar in the field of Child and Youth Care who engages in creative, innovative, and interdisciplinary research.
Gulamhusein embeds the ethics of ethnography in her research, which is motivated by people and communities who self-identify as marginalized or minoritized; those sitting in intersecting nodes that increase oppression and systemic barriers. Her primary research focuses on the lived experiences of Muslim immigrants at the intersection of recreation and belonging. Always experimenting with new ways to engage students in their personal learning journey through creative teaching and learning strategies, Catherine feels very privileged to be part of the conversation on how to build a safe, welcoming, and consistently shifting learning context.
Child welfare lived experience has been a budding topic in CYC dialogue in recent years. As two individuals with lived experience in the government care system in BC, Kaeli and Cody provide a framework for transitioning from independence to interdependence as the primary goal for young people reaching the age of majority in their respective provinces.
During the presentation, participants will be asked to reflect on their own lived experience not just child welfare lived experience and will discuss how their Self shows up in their practice. Kaeli and Cody will discuss their experiences with leveraging lived experience in different professional settings and expand on current research themes in an individualized way.
This discussion will be centered on developing structured connection, collective care, and justice doing, with children, youth, and their families at its core. Cody Jacques lives on the unceded, traditional, and ancestral lands of the Katzie, Kwantlen, Semiahmoo, and Tsawwassen Nations, in what is currently known as Surrey, BC. Cody completed his B. He has worked in a variety of roles and settings including behavior intervention, education, youth outreach, youth justice, child welfare, and as a private consultant for city-based youth programming.
Cody is also an individual with lived experience in the government care system in British Columbia. Caring for those in distress, particularly those most vulnerable, such as children, can have both negative and positive impacts on those who care.
Compassion Fatigue is a real and serious concern for those working in human services. In this workshop a brief overview of these concepts will be described, followed by an understanding of the PRoQOL 5 scale. Discussion will be held as to ways a supervisor might use this scale as information to support front-line staff and potentially make changes to environments that will assist staff to maintain their wellness.
Her research interests include Vicarious Trauma, Compassion Fatigue, intimate partner violence and depicting suffering. Presently Patricia is the Interim Chair of the Department.
I knew I was not in it for the money or the fame, or the successes or praises received, but rather for the challenges, perseverance, and confidence to ensure that I did something to help the field of child and youth become a better place. It has been 46 years now and I am still going strong.
I learned how to be humble, how to be innovative in my approaches, how to ensure youth voice is the center of everything, to be trauma-informed, to create a practice of safety, and I discovered that self-care is not selfish. Come join me while I take you on my journey through the past 46 years of the good, the bad, and the ugly that continue to guide me in building a better tomorrow.
Colleen Kamps: With 46 years in the field of child and youth care, Colleen has a wide range of clinical experience across a variety of settings including: inpatient and outpatient mental health; crisis intervention; family therapy; residential services; community outreach; specialized trauma programs; education; and private practice. Colleen mentors with commitment and passion, making strong meaningful connections along the way; always guiding those she works with to new levels of their potential and vision.
She has an insatiable drive for helping others, and believes that we all have the ability to positively impact the lives of young people. No committee, no approval, no consent, yet we enter the life space of individuals and experiment on ourselves, others and the relational space.
We have progressed further than this way of being as a field. This session will serve as an open conversation regarding current educational practices known and unknown that may thwart our ethical principle and standard of responsibility to self, children, youth, and families.
Diane has worked in a variety of settings, both community and managed care, within child welfare and social services, justice and mental health. Diane is passionate about narrative research projects that support young people as the experts in their lives, creating opportunities for improved child and youth care practice by listening to the voices of the experts.
Kathryn has been working as an instructor for seven years. Prior to her career as an instructor, Kathryn worked with youth and families in a diverse range of life spaces.
She worked as both a child and youth care practitioner as well as a mental health clinician, working alongside of youth and families for over ten years. Working with complex children, youth and families is both rewarding and challenging. Child and Youth Care is a demanding field, requiring specific knowledge and skills. To be successful in this field, continual professional development is necessary. Along with experience, it is what transforms a new CYC staff member to a skillful practitioner.
However, most organizations are struggling to budget for the minimal training required by funders and accreditation bodies, let alone specific Child and Youth Care competencies. For close to fifty years, our focus has been to improve services to children, youth and families through the professional development of our members.
Not only does CYCAA offer opportunities to increase knowledge and best practices through workshops and conferences, we have also developed CYC related on-line learning, now available to anyone in Canada and even internationally at minimal cost. CYC-Net is a network of thousands of people around the world who are involved in the care of children, youth and families who for some reason are being looked after. Its main objectives are to promote and facilitate reading, learning, information sharing, discussion, networking, support and accountable practice amongst all who work with children, youth and families in difficulty.
It has often been said that CYC-Net is the most valuable resource in the world for those who work with troubled children and their families. The CYC-Net website, mobile app and Facebook groups are visited by over a million unique visitors annually. They have two daughters, Kirsten and Tamara. Kerie and Larisa are delighted to invite you to engage in an experience of Child and Youth Care in private practice. During this workshop you will learn about private practice and the renegotiation of trauma through the experience of storytelling, engaging with animals, experiencing nature as a classroom while hiking, orienting to the comfort found inside of your body as you engage in well-being and somatic practices.
You will leave with a better understanding of what it means to practice with compassion and regulation amidst the chaos that trauma can create. This workshop is interactive and you will be going outside, as long as the weather permits. Please wear appropriate footwear and come prepared to have some fun. She uses a connection to nature through forest hikes and a variety of somatic practices to support the creation of renegotiating trauma with the people she serves.
